About this spot

Ada Bojana is a triangular river island at the very south of Montenegro, formed where the Bojana river flows into the Adriatic on the Albanian border. The sea-facing beach is wide, sandy and famously laid-back — a mix of fish restaurants on stilts, a naturist resort and a small, dedicated kite community that has made this Montenegro's second kite address. The afternoon Maestral arrives from the west and south-west, side-onshore along the beach, and the sandbanks at the river mouth can serve up clean little waves on a good day.

The working directions are southerly through westerly: onshore to side-shore over sand. North-westerlies blow side-shore down the coast and stay rideable; the Sirocco from the south-east is warm but gusty. Northerly, north-easterly and easterly winds are offshore — the Bora funnelled down the river valley is particularly treacherous because it looks light on the beach and is savage a few hundred metres out. The river mouth itself runs a real current, strongest after rain and snowmelt, so give the delta a wide berth and never let a drifting board pull you into the channel.

Facilities in season include a kite school and rental on the sea beach, the famous riverside fish restaurants, and simple bungalow accommodation on the island. Access is over a single bridge from the Ulcinj road — parking is limited and can be chaotic on summer weekends. The island is quiet outside July–August, services thin out, and there is no organised rescue, so ride with a buddy. Confirm the current launch area and any naturist-zone boundaries on site.
