About this spot
Arugam Bay is a surfing destination that occasionally lets kites on the beach, and the distinction matters before you load a kite into a taxi from the airport. The town's reputation is built on its point and beach-break waves; there are no kitesurfing schools, no rental fleet and no lesson programme, so everything you ride you bring with you and rescue yourself.
The wind season is the mirror image of Kalpitiya's. From about October to January the north-east monsoon blows in off the sea, side-onshore to onshore at 15-22 knots, and riding is genuinely possible. From May to September — the season that powers the west coast — the wind here comes straight off the land, offshore, often above 20 knots, and the spot guides are blunt about it: kiting offshore here with no land downwind is not a safe option. Even in the winter window the average is lower and less consistent than Kalpitiya's, and riders report side-offshore to fully offshore gusts.
So the honest label is advanced-only, on the right days, with a rescue plan. Big surf and rip currents share the water with the surfers, fishing boats work the shoreline, and there is no organised rescue of any kind. Bring a boat cover or a downwind partner, or treat it as a wave session for experts. If you are still learning, go to Kalpitiya instead — it is a different country in every practical sense.

Needs local verification: Compiled in October 2026 from the schools' own pages (Duotone Pro Center Kappaladi, Kiteclub Kalpitiya, Valampuri, Kitesurfing Lanka, Kite Center Sri Lanka), independent spot databases (Kite Insider, Kiteloopers, Kiteguide, Kitesurf The World, Breeza) and the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority water-sports guideline. Kite riding here is officially unregulated — no demarcated launch zones exist — so the exact launch pins, the current position of fishing stakes and nets and any seasonal access change all need confirming on site, and the coordinates below are approximate rather than verified launch points. No verified live webcam exists for Kalpitiya, Mannar or Arugam Bay (Windfinder lists none for Kalpitiya), so the camera links open Windy's webcam search instead of a confirmed local feed.
