Balatonfűzfő (Zagykazetta Surf Center)

Lake Balaton (north-east end) · Hungary · 47.055°N, 18.032°E

Balaton's one genuinely official kite ground: a leased surf centre with a big grass plaza, southerly winds down the length of the lake, and water that deepens fast enough to be foiling at 15 m.

About this spot

Balatonfűzfő is the rare Hungarian launch that is not tolerated but rented: the Balatonfűzfő Szörf Klub SE has leased this ground at the north-eastern corner of the lake since 2013, on an agreement running at least 25 years, and put up a notice asking visitors to keep the grass and the shore strip clear for windsurfing, kiting, SUP, kayaks and sailing. Fishing is banned on the area, and EU money paid for showers and a changing room that are free to use during opening hours. It is also where the Beach Fesztivál is held, so the field is large enough to inflate a tube or soft kite without anyone's lines crossing yours.

The water is the north-shore story: you walk out through a channel cut in the reeds along a narrow pebble run, and the lake drops away quickly — riders on a foil are planing about 15 m from the bank, and in a fresh breeze the surface gets properly choppy, which suits jumping better than it suits a first waterstart. The prevailing wind here is from the south and south-west, blowing down the whole length of the lake onto this shore, and it is the direction the club's own spot pages point at. From the north it is offshore, and at the north-eastern corner that means being carried out of the lake's mouth and toward the far shore, so a northerly is a day to watch from the grass.

Access is the other reason people like it: about 100 km and roughly an hour from Budapest, with the last 15 minutes off the motorway. Officially only permitted vehicles may drive down to the ground, but before and after the summer season riders are allowed to drive right through to the spot, which means carrying a bag a few metres instead of a kilometre. It is a club ground rather than a resort beach — expect a grass field, a depó for canopies, a wind-blown chop and a small local crowd, not a beach bar.

Access & parking

About 100 km from Budapest, roughly an hour: M7 then the lake road to Balatonfűzfő, with parking at the surf centre. Driving down to the ground itself is officially permit-only, but is usually allowed outside the summer bathing season.

Parking: Parking at the Balatonfűzfő Surf Center; in the off-season you can often drive through to the grass.

Amenities

  • Leased surf centre with a large grass rigging plaza and a canopy depó
  • Free showers and changing room during opening hours (EU-funded facilities)
  • Balatonfűzfő Szörf Klub SE on site — the club that holds the lease and sets the local rules
  • Beach Fesztivál venue, cafés and shops in Balatonfűzfő, and the M7 within 15 minutes

Needs local verification: Compiled in October 2026 from Hungarian kiting-club spot lists, the national kiting association's own rules and venue pages, lake-regulation summaries and the meteorological service's storm-warning pages; launch points, gated access, fees and on-water zones still need checking on site. Water temperature is a seasonal lake estimate — the marine model has no inland-lake data.

Local hazards

  • Water deepens fast with no standing margin — not a place for a first waterstart
  • Northerly winds are offshore at the north-eastern corner and carry you away from the launch
  • Entry is a narrow pebble channel cut through the reeds; lines and boards catch on the reeds either side
  • Choppy, wind-blown water in a fresh south-westerly, and no lifeguard or rescue boat on site
  • A club ground with its own rules — rigging, lessons and camping all need the club's agreement
