About this spot
The Maharees (Na Machairí) is a long sandy tombolo on the north side of the Dingle Peninsula, and it is the centre of Irish kitesurfing. The spit runs roughly north–south: on its eastern side lies Scraggane Bay, a sheltered, shallow bay with butter-flat water, while the western side opens onto Brandon Bay, a long beach facing the Atlantic with real waves. Because there is water on both sides of the spit, you can simply cross the road to match the wind direction — this is why the Maharees works in almost any wind.
W, SW and NW winds give waves in Brandon Bay; N and E winds make Scraggane Bay the flat-water playground. Offshore directions depend on which side you launch from — on the Brandon Bay side, easterlies are offshore and dangerous; in Scraggane, westerlies blow offshore. The tidal range is large (around 4 m), currents run through the channels between the islands at the north end, and the Atlantic swell in Brandon Bay can be powerful. Water is cool all year (roughly 9–16 °C) — a 4/3 or 5/4 mm suit is standard.
The Maharees has a dedicated kite centre and school (one of Ireland's oldest), a campsite, cafés and pubs in the village, and parking near the beaches. Suitable for everyone from beginners (Scraggane with a school) to wave experts (Brandon Bay in swell).
