About this spot
Le Morne is a peninsula at the south-west tip of Mauritius, under Le Morne Brabant mountain, and it is the most famous kite spot on the island. Its Kite Lagoon is a large bay sheltered by a distant reef: ION CLUB, which runs a centre here, describes a knee- to waist-deep standing area with flat water and an onshore wind for beginners, conditions shifting to side-shore with more chop about 200 m out, and waves breaking on the reef roughly 400–600 m out for experienced riders only.
The wind is mainly the south-east trade, accelerating around the tip of the peninsula. Local operators give the season as April to the end of November, with June to October the steadiest window at roughly 15–25 kn; from December to March the wind eases and occasionally swings north. Water is about 24 °C in the windy winter months and warmer in summer.
This is a documented learning spot: schools teach complete beginners in the standing area, and a local surf school recommends the left side of the lagoon at low tide for the flattest freestyle water. A tourist guide warns, though, that Le Morne is also the island's most dangerous site when riders drift outside — strong current through the reef channel can carry you out — so stay inside the lagoon unless you are going to the reef with a boat.

Access & parking
Le Morne peninsula on the south-west coast, about an hour's drive from the international airport. The public beach and school centres are along the peninsula road near the hotels.
Parking: Parking at the public beach and at the school centres; confirm the current access with the schools.
Amenities
- ION CLUB Kite Lagoon centre (lessons, rental and supervision, daily 9am–5pm) and other schools on the peninsula.
- Hotels, restaurants and the village of La Gaulette nearby.
Needs local verification: Compiled in October 2026 from the schools' own pages (ION CLUB Le Morne, Mauritius Surf Holidays) and independent spot guides (KiteInsider, sejour-maurice). Exact launch pins, public beach-access paths (much of the coast is lined with hotels and villas), any hotel or yacht-club launch restrictions, reef-pass currents, rescue-boat cover and lagoon depth at each tide all still need confirming on site — coordinates are approximate, not verified launch points.
Local hazards
- Strong outgoing current through the reef channel — do not drift out of the lagoon towards the pass.
- Coral and shallow reef sections — booties are recommended and never jump in standing-depth water.
- The reef waves (One Eye, Manawa, Little Reef) are for experienced riders only, ideally with boat support.
- Busy with schools in season — keep clear of the lesson area.
- Northerly and westerly winds are offshore or blocked by the mountain here — do not ride in them.
