About this spot
Liepāja is nicknamed 'the city where the wind is born' for good reason — it is one of the windiest places on the Baltic coast. The main kite area is the long, wide sandy beach south of the city centre, between the Seaside Park (Jūrmalas parks) and the southern suburbs. The beach is broad enough for comfortable launching even with a crowd, and the sand bottom shelves gently through a couple of sandbars that produce rolling Baltic waves from knee to logo high.
South-west, west and north-west winds blow side-onshore and give the best and safest sessions. Southerlies run almost cross-shore and get gusty off the city; anything with east in it is offshore and must be avoided — there is nothing but open sea downwind. Stay well away from the northern breakwaters and the port entrance: the Liepāja harbour moles have strong currents and ship traffic. In summer the central beach has marked swimming zones, so ride south of the busy section.
Infrastructure is excellent: free and paid parking along Peldu iela and the beach streets, cafés, toilets and showers, a lifeguard service in season and the whole city behind you for accommodation and food. Local kite schools and shops operate in summer. It suits intermediate riders in moderate conditions and experts when the autumn storms bring overhead waves.
