About this spot

Punta Las Marías, the point at the east end of Ocean Park, is described by a local San Juan guide as the city's main kitesurfing launch: riders rig on the grass and walk onto a sandy beach. Kite Puerto Rico, an IKO school based directly on Ocean Park beach since 2010, runs private beginner courses here and says no experience is needed beyond being able to swim.

The season is the winter trade wind, December to April, typically 12–25 knots from the east and north-east and often gusty. A long reef about half a mile offshore breaks in winter swell and draws surfers, so the outside water is wave water, not lesson water.

Marked swimming areas share the shoreline and kiters must keep clear of them. The water is warm all year — roughly 26–29 °C, an estimate rather than a measured series — so a rash guard or shorty is enough.
