About this spot
Playa Copal sits on Bahía Salinas at Costa Rica's north-west tip, where the Papagayo gap funnels north-easterly trades across the beach side-onshore to near-sideshore. The season runs November to May/June, strongest January–March; the venturi effect means forecasts understate the real wind, with 20–40 knots on the strong days.
Two schools teach directly on this beach: Tico Kite School and Costa Kite (Kiteboarding Costa Rica), both running IKO-certified beginner programs. The bay is protected by Isla Bolaños and the headlands, so there is no real shorebreak — flat to small chop with about 250 m of flat water behind a reef near the school area.
Hazards are the small ones that matter: stingrays near the shore (shuffle your feet), sharp stones and shells on parts of the beach, and a large tide swing around the full moon that narrows the beach at high tide. Sources place the spot in Bahía Salinas but none published a surveyed launch pin, so treat the map position as the bay, not a rigging point.
