About this spot

Playa Encuentro sits between Sosúa and Cabarete, about two kilometres downwind of Kite Beach, and is the stretch the locals use when they want a wave rather than a flat bay. It is a shallow, sand-and-reef beach with small-to-medium waves breaking over the offshore reef — enough to ride and enough to hurt if you arrive on a board-off with no plan.

The coast here runs the same way as at Cabarete, so the recommended wind is from the east, arriving side-shore to side-onshore. A model-based kite-day record over nine years puts the reliable window in the first half of the year and the summer: about 57% of days in January, 69% in February, 60% in March, 65% in April, 72% in May and 89% in June, then a clear drop to 53% in September, 43% in October and 44% in November. That source defines a kite day as three or more hours of 12–35 kn and shares its grid cell with four nearby spots, so read it as the area rather than this exact beach.

Spot guides describe Encuentro as a spot for intermediate riders that experts also love, and no kite school was found teaching beginners in this wave zone — the surf lodges here are surf-oriented and recommend going with a local operator. It is a downwinder beach: ride it from Cabarete, and plan the return on a motoconcho or bus unless you have arranged a car to meet you.

Access & parking

On the coast road between Sosúa and Cabarete: about 15 km from Puerto Plata (POP), 60 km from Santiago (STI) and a long 335 km from Punta Cana (PUJ).

Parking: Parking reported at the beach itself; no fee or permit is documented, which still needs checking on the day.

Amenities

  • Surf and kite lodges in the area, including El Encuentro Surf Lodge, with guided access through local operators recommended rather than arriving alone.
  • No dedicated kite school teaching in the wave zone was confirmed — the surf schools here are surf-oriented.

Needs local verification: Compiled in October 2026 from the schools' own pages (KiteDR, GoKite Cabarete, Cabarete Kite Point, Kite Buen Hombre, matosurf), independent spot records (KiteInsider, kitesurftheworld, Unplug, Ventosurf, kiteCOMPASS, Breeza), a sargassum tracker, satellite sea-surface monthly averages for Puerto Plata and OpenStreetMap geocodes. None of the four coordinates is a verified launch pin: Kite Beach has no OSM node at all and the published GPS reverse-geocodes to a street, Playa Encuentro is the only true beach polygon, and Buen Hombre and Punta Rucia resolve to village nodes whose published spot coordinates disagree by up to 3 km. Beach fees, permits, kite zones, rescue cover, toilets and medical facilities, the shark situation, the seabed inside the Punta Rucia mangroves and any protected-area rules along that coast all still need confirming on site.

Local hazards

  • Shallow waves over reef: you need wave experience, and the landing is inside the surf.
  • Downwinder logistics — there is no car at the end of the ride unless you arranged one; the return is a motoconcho or bus to Cabarete.
  • No kite-beginner school was found teaching in this wave zone, so it is not a place to learn.
  • No verified webcam of this beach exists; the nearest confirmed live cam is Cabarete Kite Beach, about 2 km away.
  • Facilities are reported at the beach (parking, food, showers, toilets) by a rider listing rather than an official page — check before relying on them.
