About this spot

Nicaragua's official tourism board places kitesurfing on Ometepe south of Santo Domingo beach in the Santa Cruz community, reached by ferry from San Jorge, and advises taking 9–11 hours of lessons first. Kitesurf Ometepe, an IKO-certified F-ONE Pro School, is one of two schools on the island.

The school describes trades of 15–25 knots from November to May, most consistent December to March. The wind is usually strongest in the morning, drops around midday or 13:00 and picks up again late in the afternoon.

It's on- and side-shore, so a rider in trouble drifts back to land, over choppy water with small waves and a sandy volcanic bottom with no reef, rocks or current — the school calls it one of the safest natural spots to learn in Central America. Schools open in the dry season only.
