About this spot
São Pedro sits in a bay on São Vicente's south-west coast, right beside Cesária Évora Airport, where the gap between two mountains funnels the north-easterly trade down onto the water. Riders describe what that does: the water is ironed flat and the wind arrives markedly stronger than anywhere else in the country, reported at 6–9 Bft and 30–35 kn — a foil, speed and freestyle bay rather than a cruising beach.
The same funnel is the hazard. The trade hits this bay fully offshore, a shore break of up to 2 m can land straight on the sand, and the current in the bay is strong enough that the local guide discourages casual swimming. The operator who works with the bay says it plainly: only for advanced kitesurfers, and only in arrangement with their team with a boat alongside. There is no school or rental on the sand here — the boat support is something you book, not a beach you walk up to.
A Mindelo operator quotes a gentler 16–20 kn cross-shore for the island as a whole, with the trade blowing almost every day from mid-December to the end of May and strengthening in the afternoon; that figure is for the wider coast, and the funnel makes São Pedro itself the strongest and least forgiving spot in Cape Verde. If you have not practised a self-rescue and have no boat cover organised, ride Baía das Gatas instead — that is where the same operator sends its beginners.

Amenities
- No school or rental on the beach — foil.guide lists none at this exact spot.
- Boat support is arranged with a Mindelo operator that works the bay; that arrangement is the entire safety plan.
Needs local verification: Compiled in October 2026 from the KiteInsider spot and destination records for Kite Beach (Sal), Sal Rei and Praia de Chaves, the schools' own pages for Kite-Verde, Duotone Pro Center Boa Vista and the São Vicente operator, independent spot logs (kiteforum, lets-kite, spots4kite, foil.guide), satellite sea-surface averages for Boa Vista and OpenStreetMap geocodes. The exact launch pins on the long beaches of Costa da Fragata and Praia de Chaves — and the Sal Rei coordinate, which geocodes to the town centre rather than a launch — the beach fees, permits and kite zones, the mangrove-lagoon access behind Chaves, any seasonal turtle-nesting access rules inside the Morro de Areia reserve, the seabed and depth at São Pedro, and the direction and reliability of the summer southerly wind all still need confirming on site.
Local hazards
- Fully offshore trade — the funnel blows you off this beach, and the local norm is a boat arranged in advance, not self-rescue.
- A shore break of up to 2 m can land on the sand at the landing.
- Current in the bay; casual swimming is discouraged by the local guide.
- 30–35 kn is reported here, roughly two Beaufort above the rest of the country — rig down.
- No school, rental or rescue station on the sand; the boat is a booked service, not a beach facility.
- Right beside the airport approach path — no formal kiting restriction is confirmed, but check on site.
