About this spot
Lake Siutghiol lies directly behind Mamaia between Constanța and Năvodari, and it is the reason a westerly forecast is not a wasted day in this part of the coast. The directions that are offshore on the sea — south-west, west-south-west, west and north-west — become workable on the lake, provided you launch from the bank that puts the wind crossing the water toward you rather than away from you. The water is generally flatter than the sea, with chop and small waves only when the wind builds, which makes it the place riders use for technique work and for first waterstarts on steady wind, and the shore clubs — Nautic Yachting Club, Windsurfing Piccadilly and Club Nautic Pinguin — teach from their own stretches.
The trade-off is gustiness, and it is the real hazard rather than the water itself: before the wind reaches the lake it crosses open ground, buildings and other obstacles on the near bank, and in places it arrives irregular, with sudden swings in strength. The local guide's advice is not to trust the gap between average speed and gusts but to check live readings and then stand at the launch and watch — if the riders on the water are losing and regaining traction, it is not a day for learning. The practical rule the same guide gives is worth remembering: east wind, check the sea; west wind, check the lake. The two are minutes apart and work on almost opposite directions.
Season-wise the lake is strongest in April to June and September to October, when the westerly sector is more common, and late autumn costs you a thicker suit. Before you go in, check for boats, jet skis, mooring buoys, fishing nets and gear, reeds and anything shallow near the bank, and think about which way you will drift if something fails. And do not assume every point on the lake works on a westerly — the safe one depends on which bank you launch from and what is next to it, so ask the riders on the beach before you rig. A lake that looks calm can turn hard when the wind is strong and gusty.

Access & parking
Behind Mamaia on the Constanța–Năvodari road; the launch you want depends on the direction, so agree the exact bank with the shore clubs or the riders on site before you rig.
Parking: Beach-side and club parking on the banks; which one is open depends on the launch you choose.
Amenities
- Windsurf and kite clubs on the shore — Nautic Yachting Club, Windsurfing Piccadilly and Club Nautic Pinguin — with teaching and storage
- Flatter, shallow water than the sea, which suits first waterstarts and trick practice on steady wind
- Beach bars, cafés and the Mamaia resort facilities minutes away on either side
- Constanța rail station and the A4 from Bucharest, with the lake between the resort and Năvodari
Needs local verification: Compiled in October 2026 from Romanian kite schools and spot guides, the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve's coastal-zone regulation as reported by the local press, and spot databases; launch points, rescue cover, reserve permits and whether kiting is formally permitted on the unmanaged beaches must be confirmed with the reserve administration and with the school on site.
Local hazards
- Gusty, irregular wind: it crosses ground, buildings and obstacles before reaching the water, and can swing in strength without warning
- The safe bank depends on the direction — a westerly from the wrong shore becomes offshore on a lake too
- Boats, jet skis, mooring buoys, fishing nets and gear, and reeds and shallow patches near the bank
- A flat-looking lake turns difficult quickly in strong, gusty wind — and the water is not the sea, so conditions read differently
- Facilities, rentals and instructor availability change by season and by club — check before driving out
