About this spot

Trou d'Eau at the southern end of the Hermitage lagoon is, per Attitude Kite Réunion, one of the island's two busiest spots: shallow, fairly flat water for freeride and freestyle. It works with south-south-east through south-west wind, typically from cold fronts in the austral winter, and should be avoided in northerly wind.

There are three launch areas — south of the Planche Alizée restaurant, in front of L'uni-vert, and between La Bodega and the orange rescue post. Coral lies close to the surface, so the association asks riders to favour high tide.

An integral marine reserve inside and outside the lagoon is marked by four yellow buoys, and navigation there is strictly forbidden; check the FFVL site regulation for the authorised zone. As everywhere on Réunion, the association says the spot needs an autonomous level.

Needs local verification: Sources: https://www.attitudekite-reunion.re/spots (local kite association: all Réunion spots require an autonomous, confirmed-to-expert level, which is why there is no kite school on the island; never ride alone; tiger and bull shark risk, several windsurfers and surfers killed, sharks seen on all open-sea spots), https://www.attitudekite-reunion.re/meteo (SE trade May–November; relief accelerates wind, forecasts can read 1.5–2× low; example 20–25 kt forecast becoming 30–35 kt at La Gendarmerie), https://www.attitudekite-reunion.re/spots/1 (Trou d'Eau at the south of the Hermitage lagoon: shallow, fairly flat; works with S/SSE/SE/SW, avoid north wind; three launch zones; prefer high tide to protect coral; hazards — coral near the surface, urchins, narrow launch, gusty, crowded, trees and houses; integral marine reserve marked by four yellow buoys where navigation is strictly forbidden), https://federation.ffvl.fr/sites_pratique/voir/2263 (FFVL site regulation and authorised zone).
