About this spot
Namibia Kite Center operates on the Esplanade opposite The Raft restaurant. Its own spot description puts the main launch in mostly waist-deep lagoon water with onshore wind, while beginners train farther upwind with more clear water downwind. The school offers private and group lessons with qualified IKO instructors, equipment rental and launching assistance.
The centre describes predominant wind between south-east and south-west, often building from about 14:00 until evening. Do not confuse the main teaching area with the famous Speed Strip: that separate stretch has offshore wind, is not fully visible from the centre and must never be visited alone. The Second Lagoon is also beyond the centre's monitoring area.
The Benguela-cooled Atlantic is cold, although the lagoon is warmer than the open coast. The school recommends a wetsuit most of the time: a shorty in summer and a full suit in winter. Confirm the day's teaching area, water level and rescue arrangements with the centre rather than treating the whole lagoon as one safe launch.
