About this spot
Watamu is a small Swahili fishing town turned low-key kite destination, tucked into a shallow bay about 120 km north of Mombasa. A coral reef roughly a kilometre offshore takes the Indian Ocean swell out of the equation, so the water inside is flat to near-flat over sand — the local guides have been teaching here since the 1990s. The bay sits beside the Watamu Marine National Park, so the surroundings are as good as the wind.
The wind comes in the same two monsoon windows as the rest of the coast: the north-east Kaskazi from December to April and the stronger south-east Kuzi from June to September, with monthly averages around 20-22 knots in the core months. The tide reshapes the bay every six hours — sandbars and channels appear and disappear — and Mida Creek, a short ride away, offers another flat-water arena when the tide fills it. Local schools run lessons and rentals from the Garoda end of the bay.
Ride with the marine park in mind: the reef at the northern end of the bay hosts nesting green turtles, fishing dhows and outriggers work the same water, and reef sections and urchins sit in the shallows. Confirm the current school operator, the park rules and the day's launch with a local before you rig — the scene is small and the beach layout shifts with the tide.

Needs local verification: Compiled in October 2026 from the schools' own pages and independent spot databases (Kite Insider, Kiteguide, Kiterr, Kite Jungle). Exact launch pins, tidal sandbank positions, marine-park rules and school operators change with the seasons, so everything below needs confirming on site, and the coordinates are approximate rather than verified launch points. No verified live webcam exists for these spots, so the camera links open Windy's webcam search instead of a confirmed local feed.
Local hazards

- Tides reshape the bay — sandbars and channels move every six hours
- Green turtle nesting on the northern reef — give it space (marine park rules)
