About this spot
Al Ahyaa is the northern district of Hurghada and the city's main kite hub — a roughly kilometre-long shallow lagoon with a sandy bottom that works across the whole range of levels. The wind is the same north to north-north-westerly thermal that serves this stretch of coast, blowing side-onshore across the bay on a wide arc, usually 15–25 kn from April to October, with occasional 30–35 kn peaks when the desert gets hot.
The layout is simple: students and beginners stay in the waist-deep inner lagoon, stronger riders push out towards the reef edge where the water deepens and chops, and there is a wave area upwind when the swell is on. The reef is the thing to respect — it is sharp, it is shallow at low tide, and it is where the cuts happen. Built-up hotel blocks behind some launches also make the air gusty, so launch where the stations launch rather than wherever your hotel beach happens to be.
Al Ahyaa's advantage over the resort bays is that it sits in a real city: cheaper schools, markets, banks and hospitals, and Hurghada airport twenty minutes away. It is also busier and less wild than El Gouna or Soma Bay. Riders who want more space head south to Sahl Hasheesh and Makadi Bay or down to Safaga; riders who want a cheap, easy week with a city around them stay right here.
