About this spot
Dahab sits on the Sinai shore of the Gulf of Aqaba, and the gulf works like a wind tunnel: the same northerly that only murmurs further south arrives here roughly doubled, funnelling between the Sinai and Saudi mountains. The kiting happens in a shallow lagoon in the hotel zone — a few hundred metres of knee-to-waist flat water over sand, with a sheltered 'Baby Bay' for first waterstarts, numbered zones for windsurfers and kiters, and a wave area outside the reef for advanced riders.
The wind is northerly and close to year-round: strongest from June to September at 24–32 kn, a more comfortable 18–25 kn from September to May. Tide matters more than wind for how much lagoon you actually get — water is lowest around the new and full moon, and the ground turns slippery as it drains. The windsurfing section is closed to kites during the middle of the day, and the zones are marked, so ride the area your station assigns you rather than the one that looks empty.
Outside town, Dahab's legend is the Blue Lagoon 15–20 km north inside the Ras Abu Galum protectorate: waist-deep turquoise flat water with no road to it, reached by jeep and boat or camel, sleeping in Bedouin camps. It is beautiful and it is not a place to show up unsupported — there is no rescue beyond what your own school brings, and the wind pushes towards open water at the bay's edges. Fly into Sharm el-Sheikh, 85–90 km and about 1–1.5 hours away.
