About this spot

On Hatteras Island, the villages of Rodanthe, Waves and Salvo back onto Pamlico Sound — a vast, shallow body of water where you can stand hundreds of metres from the shore. That makes it one of the best flat-water learning areas on the US East Coast, and several schools run lessons here.

The prevailing summer wind is south-westerly, side-onshore on the sound side; spring and autumn bring stronger fronts from the north-east and north-west. On the other side of the island the Atlantic beaches give waves for experienced riders when the wind is onshore there.

Hazards are mild but real: shallow oyster beds and crab-pot buoys in places, thunderstorms on summer afternoons, and an easterly wind that blows offshore on the sound side. The Cape Hatteras National Seashore has its own seasonal rules for bird-nesting areas.

Amenities

  • Kite schools with lessons, rental and storage
  • Shops, campgrounds and rentals in Rodanthe, Waves and Salvo

Needs local verification: Compiled in October 2026 from independent spot guides and the general descriptions of the local schools and kite associations. Launch zones, line-length and airport rules, park permits and which school teaches where change from season to season, so everything here needs confirming on site and the coordinates are approximate, not verified launch points. No verified live webcam was found, so the camera links open Windy's webcam search instead of a local feed.

Local hazards

  • Oyster beds and crab-pot buoys in the shallows
  • Summer afternoon thunderstorms
  • Easterly winds blow offshore on the sound side — no-ride
