About this spot

Kite Beach sits at the downwind end of Kanaha Beach Park on Maui's north shore and is the island's designated kite area. The north-east trade winds blow side-onshore most days of the year, strongest in summer, and the water inside the reef is choppy with small waves, with bigger surf on the outer reef.

Several schools teach on the beach, so it is a common place to learn — but rules matter: Kahului airport is right next door, so kiting is limited to the designated zone and there are restrictions on kite flying height and line length; kites must stay out of the windsurf area upwind. Learn the current zone map from a school before your first session.

Watch the shallow reef in places, strong winds in the summer trades, and a crowded launch. A southerly or 'Kona' wind blows offshore and is a no-ride direction.

Amenities

  • Several kite schools with lessons and rental
  • Restrooms and showers in the beach park
  • Shops and restaurants in Kahului and Paia

Needs local verification: Compiled in October 2026 from independent spot guides and the general descriptions of the local schools and kite associations. Launch zones, line-length and airport rules, park permits and which school teaches where change from season to season, so everything here needs confirming on site and the coordinates are approximate, not verified launch points. No verified live webcam was found, so the camera links open Windy's webcam search instead of a local feed.

Local hazards

  • Airport next door — kite only in the designated zone, follow height and line-length limits
  • Stay out of the windsurf area upwind
  • Reef patches in the shallows
  • Southerly 'Kona' winds blow offshore — no-ride
  • Crowded launch on strong-wind days
