About this spot

When the wind comes from the east, Auckland riders head to Cheltenham Beach in Devonport. The sandy bottom makes walking out easy, and a local school uses it for lessons in easterly directions.

It is a busy swimming beach on good days, so keep at least about 50 m (two line lengths) away from the beach and well clear of other beach users. A westerly blows offshore here — ride Point Chevalier or Shoal Bay instead.

Amenities

  • Used by an Auckland kite school for lessons
  • Cafés in Devonport village

Needs local verification: Compiled in October 2026 from the Auckland school Wings & Waves' own beach guide, Aerial Kiteboarding's Auckland notes, Kite Insider and Kiteforum. Council rules, launch space, tide windows and school meeting points change, so everything here needs confirming on site and the coordinates are approximate, not verified launch points. No verified live webcam was found, so the camera links open Windy's webcam search instead of a local feed.
