About this spot
Point Chevalier ('Pt Chev') is an urban harbour spot west of central Auckland, and Auckland's kite schools teach here — a lot of local riders had their first lesson on its big shallow tidal flats. Westerly-sector winds work: SW, WSW and W most consistently, with NW also named. The wind rolls over the Waitākere Ranges first, so it is gusty and frontal rather than a smooth sea breeze; white rain fronts can arrive fast and bring the strongest gusts.
The tide decides everything. At high tide you can step straight in from the small park, but launch space between the trees is very tight; at low tide it is about a ten-minute walk out over the flats. Around two hours either side of high tide a sandbar can leave a small flat-water patch. Sharp shells and oysters near the launch make booties worthwhile, and some reports mention water-quality issues after heavy rain.

Needs local verification: Compiled in October 2026 from the Auckland school Wings & Waves' own beach guide, Aerial Kiteboarding's Auckland notes, Kite Insider and Kiteforum. Council rules, launch space, tide windows and school meeting points change, so everything here needs confirming on site and the coordinates are approximate, not verified launch points. No verified live webcam was found, so the camera links open Windy's webcam search instead of a local feed.
