About this spot
Da'an Beach is the west coast's most organised place to learn. The Taichung city government has zoned the water here: a beach play area, a surfing area and a separate surfing-and-kitesurfing area, open from March to December between 07:00 and 18:00 — the only beaches in the country with that kind of written designation. The zone is unattended, so the official notice tells riders to check the Central Weather Administration's live sea conditions and their own state before going out.
The resident school, taiwankitesurfing.com, teaches on this sand: a three-hour session with a full F-ONE kite and board set for NT5,500, showers and a rest area at the MANERA cafe, with an advanced-booking system and a full refund if weather cancels the lesson. The school's own rule matters for winter planning: when the monsoon blows too strong in winter, lessons move to Tainan in the south, so Da'an is a shoulder-season and summer-teaching beach as much as a year-round one.
The water reads like the rest of the Taiwan Strait coast: a west-facing beach with extensive shallow sandbars and tidal flats, a sheltered lagoon behind the main shoreline managed by seawalls and groins, and rapidly changing depths through the tide. A spot guide puts the average wind around 10.5 knots year-round with 32 percent rideable days, best in the winter months when the northerly component is most consistent — that north wind is the guide's side-shore optimum for this west-facing beach.

Needs local verification: Sources: the Taichung city government's official Daan Seaside Paradise sea-conditions page (zoned 'Surfing and Kitesurfing Area', open March to December 07:00–18:00, areas unattended, E. coli swimming warning, CWA real-time sea data), taiwankitesurfing.com's own lesson page (lessons at Da'an Beach in Taichung City, NT5,500 per 3-hour session with a full F-ONE set, winter lessons relocate to Tainan when wind is too strong, insurance not included, waiver required) and the kiteCOMPASS spot card (west-facing beach, shallow sandbars and tidal flats, seawalls and groins, tidal currents, about 10.5 kt average and 32 percent wind days, best in winter on north winds described as the side-shore optimum, 'Beginner' skill level). The wind window beyond the guide's north-winter statement is my reading of a west-facing shore — easterly sector reads offshore here and is marked accordingly; no published wind rose exists for the beach. Needs local verification.
Local hazards
- The zoned area is unattended — the city's own notice says the beach, surf and kite areas have no lifeguards and riders assess conditions themselves
- The city states E. coli levels in the near-shore water have not stabilised and advises against swimming — rinse well and keep water out of your mouth
- Strong tidal currents and rapidly changing depths over the sandbars — check the tide table before each session
- Seawalls, groynes and breakwater structures line the shore
- Winter monsoon days can exceed what the school teaches in — sessions move south to Tainan
- Boat and fishing traffic in the area per the spot guide's hazard list
