About this spot

Zhunan is where Taiwan's kite teaching gathered. A Hong Kong-based IKO instructor has run complete eight-hour IKO Level 1 and Level 2 courses here — finished with an IKO member card — describing Zhunan as a place where a full beginner course fits into a single weekend, with a beach-club base run by a local family at No. 91 Zhuwei Street. The club is billed as 'one of a kind' and is the trip's fixed base: dormitory beach huts, lesson briefings on the sand, and the kind of beach-party social life the trip page markets around.

The resident school, WaveYard Taiwan, sits on the same west-coast strip in Zhunan and teaches small-group and one-to-one sessions — beginner explore lessons at NT2,000 per hour with equipment rental, private kitesurf coaching at NT3,000 per two hours, advanced one-to-one for back rolls, big air and wave riding, plus kite equipment rental at NT2,500 per day. A third directory, KiteGlobe, counts the island's handful of schools and lists WaveYard among the country's three or four operating centres.

The wind story is the Taiwan Strait's: the northeast monsoon blows reliably from roughly October to March and Zhunan sits squarely in that corridor — the visiting instructor's pitch is exactly that Taiwan has wind all year around when most Asian spots are in low season. The beach is a sandy west-facing shore on the Miaoli coast, open to the strait's swell and chop rather than sheltered like a lagoon.

Needs local verification: Sources: the Hong Kong instructor's own lesson and trip pages (complete 8-hour IKO Level 1 & 2 course in Jhunan/Zhunan with an IKO member card, The SPOT beach club at No. 91 Zhuwei Street, Zhunan Township, Miaoli County, Taiwan's wind 'all year around'), WaveYard Taiwan's own site (kitesurf school located on the west coast, Zhunan teaching centre, beginner explore lesson NT2,000/1h with rental, one-to-one NT3,000/2h and NT5,000/2h tiers, equipment rental NT2,500/day, small-group and private formats) and KiteGlobe's Taiwan school directory (three schools listed, WaveYard among them). No wind climatology is published for the beach itself — the northeast-monsoon framing comes from the instructor's pitch and the island's general kiteboarding write-up (first legal centre at Golden Beach, Tainan in 2004; shops in Zhunan, Hsinchu, Da'an, Beimen and Yunlin, all with IKO-certified coaches). The wind window is my reading of a west-facing shore; the exact sand the SPOT club launches from is described only by its street address. Needs local verification.

Local hazards

  • Open west-facing strait shore — swell and chop rather than flat lagoon water
  • The easterly sector reads offshore on this coast and pushes riders out to sea
  • Typhoon season runs July to September and closes the coast when a storm approaches
  • No lifeguard cover is published for this stretch of beach
  • The visiting-instructor courses run on scheduled trips, not on demand — book ahead
