About this spot
Across the peninsula from the lagoon, Dakhla's ocean side is where wave riders go when the swell arrives. The point breaks and beach breaks along the Atlantic shore pick up north-westerly swell, and the same north-easterly trade wind that powers the lagoon blows here side-offshore — grooming the waves into clean, hollow walls. It is a very different game from the flat lagoon: side-offshore wind, real waves and a rocky bottom in places.
Side-offshore means exactly what it says: if anything goes wrong, the wind carries you away from the beach into the open Atlantic. Only ride the ocean side with a boat or jet-ski safety arrangement — most kite camps offer guided wave sessions with rescue cover. South-westerly winds turn it onshore and messy; the trade-wind NE is the quality direction. The water here is noticeably cooler than the lagoon thanks to the Canary Current.
Sessions on the ocean side are usually organised through the lagoon camps as half-day trips with 4x4 transport. There is no infrastructure on the ocean beaches themselves — no food, no shade, no rescue beyond what you bring. For advanced and expert riders it is one of the best down-the-line wave playgrounds in Africa; for everyone else, the lagoon is the place.
