About this spot
Moulay Bouzerktoun, a small fishing village 20 km north of Essaouira, is a legendary name in windsurfing and kitesurfing: a rocky point where the north-easterly trade wind accelerates to 25–35 kn and clean Atlantic swell wraps in, producing world-class down-the-line wave conditions. When it is on, it is one of the best wave spots in Africa — and it is strictly for experts.
The trade wind blows side-offshore here, which is what makes the waves so clean — and what makes the spot unforgiving. A broken line or a lost board means drifting into the open Atlantic; there is no rescue service, and the rocky launch punishes mistakes. The village has a few guesthouses and cafés catering to the wave community, and that is about it. Essaouira, with full services, is 20 minutes south.
Ride Moulay only if you are fully self-sufficient in waves, carry spares and a repair kit, and ideally go with locals or other experienced riders who know the launch and the currents. For everyone else, watching the action from the cliff-top café with a mint tea is a great session too.
