About this spot
The Trabucador is a long, narrow sand bar in the Ebro Delta natural park, south of Tarragona. On one side lies the Alfacs Bay — a huge, shallow, almost perfectly flat lagoon that is one of the best learning and freestyle areas in Spain; on the other side, a short walk across the spit, is the open Mediterranean with chop and small waves.
The bay side faces roughly north-west, so north-westerly (Mistral-type) winds blow side-onshore across the flat water and are the classic direction; the thermal easterly and south-easterly sea breezes work on the sea side. South-westerly winds are offshore on the bay side. The water in Alfacs is standing depth over large areas with a sandy bottom. Watch for shellfish farm buoys and boat channels in the bay, and respect the natural-park rules — parts of the delta are protected bird areas with access restrictions.
There are kite schools operating in the delta in season, parking along the Trabucador road, and services in Sant Carles de la Ràpita and La Ràpita. Warm water from late spring to autumn. Zones and protected-area rules must be checked locally.
