About this spot
Esposende, at the mouth of the Cávado river, offers two worlds in one spot: inside the estuary a shallow sandy lagoon with flat water — perfect for learning and freestyle — while on the ocean side of the sand spit the Atlantic delivers waves. It is one of the most popular kite destinations in northern Portugal.
The summer Nortada blows from the north to north-west, side-onshore on the ocean beach and across the lagoon; it is thermally reinforced in the afternoon and very reliable from May to September. The lagoon is tide-dependent: at low tide large sandbanks appear and the water can get very shallow or disappear in places; currents run in the river channel. On the ocean side, expect proper Atlantic waves and rips. The water is cold year-round due to upwelling.
Kite schools operate on the lagoon side in season, with parking near the river mouth and services in Esposende town. Beginners should stay in the lagoon with a school and mind the tide; the ocean side is for experienced riders.
