About this spot

Guincho, just north of Cascais at the mouth of the Tagus, is one of the most famous and most demanding wave spots in Europe. In summer the Nortada — a strong, thermally reinforced northerly wind — howls down the coast, often 25–40 knots, cross-offshore to side-shore, while powerful Atlantic swell pounds the beach. This is a former World Cup wave venue and it shows: the conditions are world-class and unforgiving.

The beach faces roughly west to north-west; the Nortada blows from the north to north-west, side-onshore on the northern part of the beach. The hazards are serious: heavy shore break, powerful rip currents, rocks at both ends of the beach (especially the northern end), cold water from Atlantic upwelling (14–19 °C even in summer), and a wind that is often much stronger than forecast. Southerly and easterly winds are offshore or gusty over the land and not rideable here.

This is strictly an expert spot — not for learning, not for intermediates on big days. There is parking along the road, beach restaurants, and Cascais and Lisbon nearby; kite schools operate mostly at friendlier spots nearby (e.g. Carcavelos / São Pedro do Estoril area for lessons). Respect the locals and the summer swimming zones.
