About this spot
Hunstanton, on the Norfolk coast, is unusual for East Anglia: it faces west across the Wash, but the kite area north of the town (Old Hunstanton) catches northerly winds from the North Sea. The Wash has a very large tidal range — around 6–7 m on springs — so the beach transforms through the day: at low tide huge sand flats and shallow, flat pools open up, ideal for learning; at high tide the water reaches the sea wall and dunes.
N, NW and NE winds are the working directions at Old Hunstanton. W winds blow along the cliffs and are gusty; S and SE winds blow off the land and are dangerous. The incoming tide moves fast over the flats and can cut riders off from the shore — always know the tide times. There are groynes and chalk/carrstone rocks below the famous striped cliffs.
Parking at Old Hunstanton and the town promenade; a kite school operates locally. Excellent for beginners on the right tide, and fun freestyle in the flat pools. North Sea water is cold outside summer.
