About this spot
Rhosneigr, on the west coast of Anglesey, is the centre of the Welsh kite and windsurf scene. Several beaches — Traeth Llydan, Broad Beach and Cymyran — face west to south-west into the Irish Sea and catch the strong winds of passing Atlantic depressions. Waves break over sand and over reefs, and the choice of beach lets riders pick flatter or more wavy conditions.
SW, W and NW winds blow side-shore to side-onshore along the main beaches. S works with care; E and NE blow off the land and are dangerous. Reefs and rocks lie off parts of the beaches, especially between bays, and the tide (around 4–5 m range) changes the riding area and currents — Cymyran is near the channel to the Inland Sea, where currents are strong. RAF Valley airfield is next to Cymyran: respect any exclusion zones and drone/kite height restrictions.
The village has a kite school, shops, cafés and parking near the beaches. Best for intermediate and expert riders; learning is possible with a school on calmer days. The water is cool most of the year.
