About this spot

The Astana Times describes a Kapchagay spot where wind starts at 6 a.m., reaches up to 18 m/s and by noon raises waves of 2–3 metres. The reservoir is about 100 km long and 25 km wide, 70 km from Almaty.

This is a windsurf-led scene; no kite school is documented. Strong wind, big waves and long distances make it experts-only.

Amenities

  • Resorts and pools for Almaty visitors

Needs local verification: Compiled in October 2026 from the Riders of the Storm school's Aktau camp page, Kiteforum and Kite Jungle spot cards, Spotkitesurf, the Astana Times report on Kapchagay and Citypass Kazakhstan's kitesurfing overview. Kazakhstan has no resident kite school listed by the international guides — the Aktau lessons are seasonal camps (May–September). Pins are approximate and wind windows outside Soldatka are my reading of the shoreline; check on site. The many steppe spots around Astana are snow- and landkite fields and are not listed here.

Local hazards

  • Strong wind and 2–3 m waves
  • Very large open water
  • No kite rescue
