About this spot
Larkollen, on the western side of the outer Oslofjord in Østfold, is the go-to learning spot for the Oslo area. A shallow sandy bay with small islands and skerries offshore keeps the water flat and the waves out, and large areas are waist-deep — ideal for first waterstarts and relaxed freeride sessions. It is about an hour's drive from Oslo, so it gets busy on windy summer weekends.
S, SE and SW winds blow into the bay and are the working directions; W is gusty over the land. N and NE blow offshore towards the open fjord — dangerous. The water is shallow far out, which is great for learning but means watching for stones and occasional rocks; at low tide some areas dry out. The fjord has boat traffic in summer — stay clear of marked channels. Water temperatures reach about 17–18 °C in late summer but are cold in spring and autumn.
There is parking near the beach, and the Larkollen village has a small shop and café in season. Excellent for beginners and families; advanced riders use it for freestyle in the flat water. The best flat-water alternative to the exposed Jæren wave spots.
