About this spot
Leucate and La Franqui, on the Mediterranean coast of Occitanie, form one of the windiest kite areas in the world — home of the Mondial du Vent. The Tramontane, a powerful north-westerly funnelled between the Pyrenees and the Massif Central, regularly blows 35–45 knots here. The area offers two playgrounds: the Étang de Leucate lagoon with flat shallow water, and the long Mediterranean beach of La Franqui with chop and waves.
The Tramontane (NW) is the dominant wind: on the sea beach it blows side-offshore to side-shore and is extremely gusty near the cliffs; on the lagoon it is the classic flat-water direction. The summer sea breeze (Marin, from the SE) blows onshore on the sea beach and is the gentler option. This card's compass covers the lagoon side, where NW works; treat the sea beach in Tramontane as experts-only. The gusts in strong Tramontane are violent — choose small kites and check the forecast carefully.
Kite schools and centres operate at the Étang (Leucate / La Palme area) and on the sea beach; parking at both; the towns of Leucate and La Franqui have full services. Warm water in summer. The lagoon suits all levels; the sea beach in Tramontane is for experienced riders only.
