About this spot

North Sound is a big, reef-fringed lagoon wedged between Virgin Gorda, Necker Island and Jost Van Dyke, and it is where most of the BVI's flat-water riding happens. Spot guides describe it as shallow and flat with deep water in the middle, the easterly trades funnelling through the passes between the islands and picking up speed.

The trade-off is access. Launch beaches are limited and often private, so the normal way to ride here is to dinghy out and drift-launch in the middle of the sound, then ride back to the boat. Charter yachts moor up daily, so you share the water with anchorage traffic and need to keep clear of the moorings.

Kite schools run lessons out of Saba Rock and Marina Cay, which is the sensible way in: they know which beaches still allow a launch, where the coral heads sit and where the day's wind is cleanest.

Amenities

  • Protected flat water with deep water in the middle for freestyle
  • Kite schools run lessons from Saba Rock and Marina Cay
  • Wind funnels between the islands and is strongest in winter

Needs local verification: Sources: an established spot guide describing North Sound as a protected, shallow, flat lagoon with an easterly main direction, wind funneling through the eastern and south-eastern passes and limited launch beaches best entered by dinghy; charter and instructor listings placing kite schools at Saba Rock and Marina Cay. Coordinates sit at Saba Rock, the sound's meeting point, not at a launch beach. Wind figures are estimates. Needs local verification.

Local hazards

  • Reef and coral heads around the edges of the sound — booties recommended
  • Charter yachts mooring daily; keep clear of anchorages and mooring lines
  • Westerly winds blow offshore and drop turbulence off the islands
