About this spot

Punta del Este is a peninsula with two different coastlines: Playa Mansa on the sheltered side and Playa Brava on the open Atlantic. Riders' spot guides name the season January to March and September to December, and describe Mansa working with south to south-westerly wind while Brava takes the opposite sector.

The wind is the honest caveat. The same guide reports an annual average near 9 knots, with only about 6–7% of January and February hours reaching 15 knots — so this is a spot you book around a forecast, not a reliable blow. Its season summary and its own wind numbers do not fully agree, which is a further reason to treat the knot range as approximate.

Water is well documented: seatemperature.org's monthly averages run 22.4 °C in January and February, 19.7 °C in April and a July low of 11.9 °C, so a wetsuit is needed for most of the year. No school's own page confirms a beginner teaching area at either beach — an aggregator labels the area intermediate to advanced, which is not a school statement — so ask an operator before a first session.

Amenities

  • Accommodation, restaurants and rental shops across the peninsula
  • Instruction availability needs confirmation with an operator before travel

Needs local verification: Sources: https://kiteinsider.com/spots/punta-del-este-uruguay (season months, beach-by-beach direction, ~9 kt annual average with 6–7% of Jan/Feb hours at 15 kt, intermediate-to-advanced label), https://www.seatemperature.org/south-america/uruguay/punta-del-este-average.htm (monthly averages: 22.4 °C Jan, 22.7 Feb, 22.3 Mar, 19.7 Apr, 16.7 May, 14.1 Jun, 11.9 Jul, 12.2 Aug, 12.7 Sep, 16.0 Oct, 18.6 Nov, 20.8 Dec). The difficulty label and the opposite-sector note come from an aggregator, not a school, so beginner-friendly is withheld and the usable sector needs local confirmation. The 12–28 kt range is an estimate around the aggregator's 15 kt threshold. Coordinates mark the peninsula, not a verified launch. Windy links are searches/maps, not verified local webcams.

Local hazards

  • Wind is reported light-prone — a session may not materialise
  • Playa Brava is an exposed Atlantic beach with heavy surf and rip currents
  • Heavy beach crowds in January and February
  • No school-confirmed beginner teaching area at either beach
