About this spot
Saly-Portudal is described by Kite Insider as West Africa's biggest purpose-built beach resort — a dense strip of hotels, restaurants and nightclubs on the Petite Côte, under an hour from Dakar. That makes it the convenient end of the Senegalese coast: you stay where the kiters are rather than arranging a base elsewhere.
Sene Kitesurf Club is listed as teaching at Saly, selling lessons and rental, and describing a three-stage progressive method: land-based fundamentals with a small trainer kite, control practice with a 7 m² kite, then a supervised water-start and first rides. Its own season is given as November to August. The community spot guide independently lists Saly for beginner, intermediate and expert riders on a medium sand beach with small waves, naming NNE, W and WNW as its main directions with February to August as its best months.
It is a working resort beach, not a lagoon: sunbeds, swimmers and vendors share the sand, and the water is a small-wave ocean beach rather than flat water, so beginners should let the school mark the teaching area instead of rigging at the busiest stretch. Wind is light-to-moderate on the model — around 10–15 knots typical — so bring a range of kites, and expect the season to thin out in September and October.
