About this spot

Sataoa Beach Fale, about a 40-minute drive from Apia on Upolu's south coast, is where Samoa's only dedicated kiteboarding school runs its lessons. The Samoa Tourism Authority describes it as a safe, suitable environment for learning, with a wide stretch of shallow water, steady trade winds and a spacious beach for practising kite control.

The guide that surveyed the country's kite beaches calls it hands down the best place for lessons in Samoa: the beach opens into a wide expanse at low tide, the lagoon is shallow enough to walk far out toward the reef, and the wind comes in side-onshore — so a problem on the water pushes you back toward the beach instead of out to sea.

Seki Kite Samoa, the country's only kiteboarding centre, teaches with IKO-certified instructors in English, French and Spanish: a two-hour discovery or refresher session for complete beginners and returning riders (up to two people, minimum age 12, kite, bar, harness, board, helmet and buoyancy vest included), a beginner package of five two-hour lessons, and three-hour gear rental for independent riders aged 16 and over.

The trade-wind season runs May to October, when the south-east trades are consistent. Samoa sits inside the South Pacific cyclone belt, so November to April is the unreliable wet-season window. The sea never drops below the high 20s — boardshorts rather than a wetsuit.

Needs local verification: Sources: https://www.samoatourism.org/articles/605/kitesurfing-new-way-to-experience-samoas-waters (official tourism: lessons by an IKO-certified instructor, beginners taught primarily at Sataoa Beach Fale on the south coast of Upolu — wide shallow water, steady trade winds, spacious beach, about 40 min from Apia; consistent south-east trades May–October), https://www.kalena.fun/activities/seki-kitesurf/discovery-refresher-kitesurf-lesson and https://www.kalena.fun/activities/seki-kitesurf/kitesurf-equipment-rental (school booking pages: 2-hour discovery/refresher at Sataoa Beach with an IKO instructor, up to 2 people, minimum age 12, gear plus helmet and vest, English/French/Spanish; 3-hour rental for independent riders, minimum age 16), https://www.kalena.fun/guides/kitesurfing-in-samoa (Sataoa is the country's only kiteboarding lessons and rental centre; beginner package of five 2-hour lessons), https://samoapocketguide.com/kitesurfing-in-samoa-the-top-places-to-kitesurf (wide expanse at low tide, large shallow lagoon you can walk far out in, side-onshore wind that pushes you back to shore, turtles and rays, almost no other kiters). Conflict noted: that guide's 'Location' line for Sataoa says Lano village on Savai'i — a copy error in the article; the official tourism page and the school's own booking pages both place Sataoa on Upolu's south coast, and OpenStreetMap maps 'Sataoa Beach Fales' at the coordinates above. No source states wind strength in knots — the 12–28 kt range and every sector rating beyond 'side-onshore is best' are my own estimates. Water table: seatemperature.org Apia monthly averages. Windy links are searches and maps, not verified local webcams.

Local hazards

  • Coral heads and the reef edge beyond the flat — reef shoes recommended
  • Sea turtles and rays are common under the board — give them room
  • The wide shallow only works on the tides the school teaches on — ask before rigging alone
  • No shop on the beach: bring water and sun protection
  • November to April is cyclone season — wind is variable and storms are possible
