About this spot
Smile Beach is the north-coast lagoon of Djerba: a 32 km² sheet of smooth, shallow water sitting behind a sand strip that keeps the open sea at bay. Globalkite has run schools here since 2003 and works the water in zones — a marked teaching area where beginners have priority, and a private 300 m launch beach that is anywhere between 10 and 50 m wide depending on the tide and the wind. There is no current in the lagoon, and the water is mirror-flat up to about 15 kn before a small chop builds; the wave spot sits just ahead of the lagoon mouth, off the strip.
Tide matters more than anything else here: ride high water, because at low water the lagoon is barely knee deep in places and the seaweed shows through. Summer brings the easterly thermal, on record from April to October, arriving in the afternoon and blowing four or five days a week — sometimes holding into the evening. Winter brings frontal westerlies that run cross-on and can reach 25–30 kn for a day or two, while July to September is the lightest window of the year.
This is a centre beach rather than an open coast: rescue and lifeguard cover sit on the sand, instructor supervision comes with courses and supervised rental, and riders arriving on their own gear are expected to check in at the centre first. Bring the bigger kites — 12–20 kn is the normal Djerba range — and treat the marked teaching area as the school's, not as open water.

Access & parking
On the north coast of Djerba, about 5 km past Houmt Souk on the Route touristique toward the tourist zone, roughly 10 minutes from Djerba–Zarzis airport (DJE).
Parking: Beach access was reported free for 2026, with no permit and no fee; park at the centre and introduce yourself before rigging.
Amenities
- Globalkite (IKO) on the sand, with Waves by Djerba Holiday and Kitesurf Djerba nearby — rental, courses, rescue and lifeguard cover on the school beach.
- Toilets, showers, storage and a shop; the centre keeps the teaching area marked and beginners have priority inside it.
Needs local verification: Compiled in October 2026 from the KiteInsider spot records for Souk el Guebli (El Kantara) and Smile Beach (Sidi Smaël), the operator FAQ for the El Kantara lagoon, the Zarziskite school spot page and OpenStreetMap geocodes; the reported 2025 beach-use fee, the teaching-zone boundaries, the reef line at Hassi Jerbi and every launch point must be confirmed on site, and the water temperatures are published monthly averages for the Djerba–Zarzis coast rather than lagoon readings.
Local hazards
- Boat traffic is the main thing to watch once you are on the water.
- Small wooden fishing boats work in or near the lagoon.
- Seaweed at low water in light wind: drop a kite on it and the lines fill fast.
- The lagoon is very shallow at low tide — check the water level before you commit to a session.
- A southerly component pushes you across the lagoon toward the sand strip and the open sea beyond it.
- Independent riders are expected to check in at the centre before going out; supervision only covers the school's own packages.
