About this spot
Sur Masirah is the west-side lagoon on Masirah Island, beside the village and a beach camp. From about May to September the Khareef monsoon blows steadily from the south — 20-45 knots, and at its mid-June to mid-August peak it simply blows day and night. The lagoon is shallow, flat and sandy with huge room to launch, and IKO schools run seasonal courses here for all levels.
Peak-season wind is strong, so beginners learn on small kites with a school, and the trip is long — about six to seven hours' drive and a ferry from Muscat. Outside the season the wind is lighter and from the north or west, and kite operations largely pause from October to mid-April, so book lessons and rental ahead. The east coast of the island has waves for experienced riders.

Amenities
- Seasonal IKO kite centre with lessons, rental and camp accommodation
Needs local verification: Compiled in October 2026 from the schools' own pages (G.E.T Kitesurf Oman, Kiteboarding Oman), Kite Insider and the Oman Observer. Launch pins, which operator runs the seasonal camps, lesson availability outside the season and access rules change from year to year, so everything here needs confirming on site and the coordinates are approximate, not verified launch points. Lessons at Masirah outside May-September must be booked ahead. No verified live webcam was found, so the camera links open Windy's webcam search instead of a local feed.
Local hazards
- Very strong peak-season wind (25-45 knots) — small kites only
- Remote island, limited medical services
- Operations largely closed October to mid-April — book ahead
