About this spot

Lake Velence is the answer to 'is there anything windy within an hour of Budapest' — 50 km, off the M7, and good enough after work that riders count on an hour of wind even on a marginal day. It is the second most kited water in the country, and its selling point is that there is no such thing as a bad direction here: a northerly works the south side (Gárdony and Agárd are the best of them), a southerly sends you to one of the Sukoró spots on the north shore, and a south-westerly makes the Velence Korzó stretch popular, or turns the whole 10 km length of the lake into a downwind run from spot to spot.

The launch shown here is Gombászó, the big grassy area on the lake side of Béke utca in Velence, about 800 m toward Gárdony — the spot the national kiting association lists for northerly winds. The lake itself is the reason people bring beginners and why schools teach here: an average depth of about 1.2–1.6 m, a maximum of roughly 1.7 m, a sandy bottom and a flat, wave-free surface, in water warm enough to be one of the hottest lakes in Europe — 23 °C on average across the season and 28–30 °C in a summer heat wave. The catch is that the shallows make the wind gustier than on Balaton, so a session here is bumpier, and on a hot day the lake's own sea-breeze cycle can be the only thing moving.

Velence is not one beach but a dozen, and several of them are privately managed. The Sport Beach at Gárdony, the best north-wind launch on the lake, sits inside a paid bathing beach and camping and is unusable in the middle of summer when it is full of swimmers, kayaks and campers; outside the season the camping's grass works as a kite field, but the manager collects a small per-person fee on windy days and has threatened to close the spot after riders ignored the summer ban — so this is a place where being polite and staying off the bathing beach in July decides whether the spot survives. Everywhere on the lake the same three things bite: concrete embankments, fences and overhead power lines close to the water, all of which is why the spot is listed as intermediate and up rather than a beginner's playground, even though the water itself is the friendliest in Hungary. Storm warnings run from 1 April to 31 October, and the official bathing-water profile for this lake notes one or two severe windstorms a year — the yellow flashing lights, 45 flashes a minute to stay within 500 m of shore and 90 to get off the water, are not decoration.

Access & parking

About 50 km from Budapest on the M7 (Kápolnásnyék exit for Gárdony and Agárd, or the Mol station lay-by for Sukoró). For Gombászó, drive into Velence and take the waterfront turn at the roundabout, then Béke utca.

Parking: Street and beach-side parking in Velence and Gárdony; the managed beaches charge an entry or day fee.

Amenities

  • Kite and surf schools on the lake, including an IKO instructor at Surfcamping in Gárdony and a surf base in Agárd
  • Managed beaches with toilets and showers at Gárdony, Agárd and Velence (paid entry in season)
  • Camping, cable wake park, cafés and shops around the lake, and a lakeside cycle path the full length
  • Direct train service from Budapest to Gárdony and Velence — the only Hungarian kite water reachable without a car

Needs local verification: Compiled in October 2026 from Hungarian kiting-club spot lists, the national kiting association's own rules and venue pages, lake-regulation summaries and the meteorological service's storm-warning pages; launch points, gated access, fees and on-water zones still need checking on site. Water temperature is a seasonal lake estimate — the marine model has no inland-lake data.

Local hazards

  • Concrete embankments, fences and overhead power lines near the water at several launches — this is not a beginner's beach despite the shallow water
  • Gustier wind than Balaton, with sudden squalls; the official lake profile records one or two severe windstorms a year
  • The Gárdony Sport Beach ground is private: paid entry, closed to kiters during the summer bathing season, and a per-person fee on windy days outside it
  • Very shallow water means the wind can drop you in a spot with no depth — but it also means a long, exposed walk back if you drift
  • Storm warning lights govern the water: 45 yellow flashes a minute means stay within 500 m of shore, 90 means water-sports craft stay off
