About this spot
Witsand sits at the mouth of the Breede River on the Western Cape's south coast, about three and a half hours east of Cape Town. The local tourism office calls it one of the top uncrowded kite destinations on that coast.
The prevailing summer wind is the south-easter, which blows onshore here, and a protective sandbar lets the estuary stay flat — good for practising tricks and for novice riders. Lessons are offered by a local VDWS-certified instructor during the summer months.
The estuary carries tidal current and boat traffic, and the open sea beyond the sandbar is a different, much rougher place, so stay inside the estuary unless you know the river mouth.

Access & parking
About 3.5 hours east of Cape Town via the N2 and the gravel/tar road from Heidelberg or Swellendam.
Parking: Parking near the estuary beaches and at the Breede River Lodge area; confirm locally.
Amenities
- A local VDWS-certified instructor teaches in the summer months.
- Adventure Centre at Breede River Lodge renting SUPs and kayaks; small-village accommodation.
Needs local verification: Compiled in October 2026 from the schools' and club's own pages (SA Kitesurf teaching spots, Cape Town Kite Club spot guide, Good Vibes Kite School, Open Ocean Africa, Visit Witsand). Exact launch pins, swim-zone boundaries, municipal or SANParks rules (Langebaan lagoon sits partly inside West Coast National Park zoning), parking fees, rescue cover and the current shark-spotter status all still need confirming on site — coordinates are beach or bay centres, not verified launch points.
Local hazards
- Tidal current in the estuary and at the river mouth — do not get carried past the sandbar.
- Boats and paddlers on the river — keep clear of them.
- Northerly and westerly winds blow offshore or from the land here — do not ride in them.
- Lessons are seasonal (summer only); outside summer there may be no rescue on the water.
