About this spot
Akyaka, a wooden-house village at the eastern head of Gökova Bay, sits on one of the best flat-water kite spots in the Mediterranean. The shallow sandbank at the mouth of the Azma river stays glassy and waist-deep for a long stretch, and an afternoon thermal blows up the bay on almost every summer day, usually 12–22 kn. It is the classic Turkish spot for beginners, board-riding, foil and freestyle practice.
The bay head faces north, so westerly and north-westerly winds arrive side-shore across the flat water and northerly winds are onshore. Southerly and easterly directions blow over the town and the surrounding hills and are offshore — avoid them entirely. The water stays remarkably flat even when the bay mouth outside is choppy, because the spot lies in the lee of the peninsula. Watch for the river channel and reed beds along the southern edge, and for swimmers and paddle-boarders near the lagoon mouth.
The town has kite schools and rental, beach clubs with showers and restaurants, and everything is within walking distance of the promenade. Dalaman airport is about 1 h 30 min away and Bodrum roughly 2 h. Akyaka is a protected, slow-paced village with strict building rules, so the setting stays green and low-rise, and the water is warm from June to October. Exact launch points, school zones and seasonal restrictions still need local verification.
