About this spot
Alaçatı, a stone-house town on the Çeşme peninsula, is the centre of Turkish kitesurfing. From June to September the meltemi — the Aegean's etesian north-westerly — builds after noon and blows side-shore along the wide surf beaches south of town, often 18–30 kn for hours at a time. Reliable wind, flat shallow water and a kite school on every corner have made it one of Europe's busiest summer playgrounds for freestyle and learning.
The kiting happens on the shallow sandy bays facing west and north-west into the strait towards Chios. The bottom is soft sand with patches of seagrass and a few rocks near the northern headland, and it stays waist-deep for a long way out, so water-starts, board-offs and self-rescues are stress-free. The meltemi peaks mid-afternoon and fades after sunset; mornings are usually flat. Westerly and north-westerly directions are onshore or side-shore, while southerly and easterly winds blow over the peninsula and are offshore — do not launch in them.
Everything a rider needs is here: schools, kite and board rental, repair shops, showers, beach cafés and parking on packed sand. Alaçatı town has restaurants and boutique hotels, and İzmir airport is roughly an hour away. In July and August the beaches are crowded with lesson groups and swimmers — launch early, keep your kite high near bathers and stay clear of the swimming zones. Exact launch permissions, school zones and parking fees shift with the season and still need local verification.
