About this spot

Gelibolu, the historic town on the European shore at the northern mouth of the Dardanelles, is where the Aegean meltemi gets squeezed through the strait and speeds up. In summer the north and north-easterly runs down-strait most afternoons, often 20–35 kn, with a kickier and gustier edge than open-coast spots. The strait's surface current, which also flows north to south, adds a real downwind drift that has to be planned for on every session.

The shore beaches run roughly east-west, so the northerly strait wind arrives side-shore; westerly directions come over the Gallipoli peninsula and are offshore, as are southerly winds blowing up-strait past the town. The water is choppy to wavy in the funnelled wind, the bottom drops off faster than in Aegean lagoons, and commercial shipping passes through the strait — ride inside the marked beach zones and keep well clear of the traffic separation scheme.

This is a spot for confident intermediates and experts: strong gusts, a pulling current, boat traffic and cold, busy water. Facilities are simple — beach cafés and informal parking — while Gelibolu has hotels, restaurants and ferries to the Asian side. Çanakkale and the Dardanelles bridges are close by and Istanbul is about 3 h. Local launch points, beach zones and the rules on keeping clear of shipping change and still need on-site verification.
