About this spot
Bohinj is a glacial lake in the Julian Alps at 526 m, about an hour's drive from Ljubljana, and it is Slovenia's inland kite address. The water is flat, the setting is a wall of mountains, and the wind is a valley thermal that arrives from the south-west with the afternoon — gusty, because it comes over the ridge, and it can die as quickly as it arrives.
The honest profile: when it is rideable it is almost always between 7 and 12 kn, so this is big-kite, light-wind-board and foil water, and the reliable window is spring — March to June, peaking in April — rather than high summer. The marked area belongs to the windsurfers and kiters are guests there; the small grassy entrance between the trees at the north-eastern end of the bay, where the wind is fully onshore, is where kiteboarders are tolerated. Do not send it over the windsurf fleet.
It is an expert spot for practical reasons rather than heroics: cold water (about 21 °C at its best), trees and bystanders on a tight bank, swimmers in July and August, paid parking right at the water, and no kite school or rescue service on the lake. Read the windsurfers — when they start rigging out, the wind is about to go. A live station and webcam sit on the lake, and the water temperature shown here is a seasonal lake estimate, not a marine reading.
