About this spot

Seča is the cape at the southern end of the Bay of Piran, and the Chickenloop Kite Club at Seča 143 is the only place on the Slovenian coast that runs kitesurfing as a proper base: lessons, rental, storage and on-water rescue, open daily from 9:00 to 19:00 between 1 April and 15 November. The water in front of the club stays flat and waist-deep for 50–100 m over sand, which makes it the place to learn, body-drag and relaunch on this side of the Adriatic.

The bay gets three winds. The one that works here is the jugo — a south-easterly through south-south-westerly that arrives with the frontal systems from autumn to spring, bringing small chop or genuinely flat water; the club's rideable window runs SE through SSW. In summer the thermal maestral from W–NW is the common wind: it blows four or five days a week, peaks between 13:00 and 15:00 and usually only reaches 5–15 kn, so plan on a big kite or a foil. North-easterly to easterly bora is side-offshore on this shore and the club takes the water down for the day — it is not a kiting wind at Seča.

Everything is compact: rig on the bank by the club, launch into the bay, and the Ribič restaurant, showers and a live club webcam are a few steps away. Access is over the restaurant's parking area and the track to the beach is sometimes blocked with rocks, so park at the restaurant and carry your gear. The spot borders the Sečovlje Salina nature park, a Ramsar wetland, so ride the club's stretch instead of wandering along the shore — and note that Slovenian practice is strict: you kite where a water-sports base provides rescue, never on a swimming beach.

  • Summer maestral is light (5–15 kn) — big kite, light-wind board or foil needed
  • Sečovlje Salina Ramsar wetland borders the spot: stay inside the club's stretch
  • Seagrass and shells on the bottom; swim boats, marina traffic and swimmers in season
  • Crowded bank in high season; squally tramontana and lebič storms can reach 90 kn
