About this spot
Izola's launch sits out by the lighthouse on the western side of town, and it is the spot locals choose when bora blows. The north-easterly to easterly burja arrives cross-shore from the right here, flatter and clearly less gusty than in the bays further south, and the water drops away fast — there is no wading in, and no walking yourself back to the beach if you break something.
The beach is small, stony and mixed with concrete, so the entry is the fiddly part: riders use the most downwind end of the bank, keep well clear of the reef upwind (it has claimed a few fins), and in July and August the sunbathers leave no room at all. Southerly and westerly winds are onshore and rideable, but with a packed beach and a shallow reef between you and the town, they are best early in the morning or outside the season.
There is no kite school at the lighthouse, so arrive with your own rescue plan: the water is deep, bora gusts can touch 40 kn, and the tramontana and lebič storms that occasionally cross the bay at 60–90 kn are a hard no. Everything else is close — town parking, showers, food and a bus back to Koper. Water runs roughly 10 °C in winter and 25 °C in summer.
