About this spot
Cumbuco is a former fishing village about 30 km west of Fortaleza that has grown into one of the busiest kite towns in the world. It works as two spots in one: the open beach in front of the village, where the trade wind blows side-shore along the coast and small waves and chop build at high tide, and Lagoa do Cauípe, a freshwater lagoon a few kilometres north behind the dunes where the water is flat and the bottom shallow.
The season runs roughly July to January, with the trade wind coming from the east and east-south-east, from the right as you look out to sea. A local school says the wind season lasts around ten months a year and that a flat forms right in front of the beach at low tide; north of the village, towards Cauípe, wave spots such as Saint Tropez and Pico das Almas pick up the northern swells from November.
Teaching is well documented: the Brazilian Kitesurf Association lists several accredited schools in Cumbuco, and independent IKO/ABK instructors describe taking complete beginners from sand drills to body-dragging on the Cauípe lagoon and onto the board within about four days. The lagoon is the learning venue; the sea in front of the village is for riders who can already stay upwind.

Amenities
- Several schools listed by the Brazilian Kitesurf Association (ABK) in Cumbuco, plus independent IKO/ABK instructors teaching on the Cauípe lagoon.
- Pousadas, rental, beach bars and restaurants throughout the village and at the lagoon.
Needs local verification: Compiled in October 2026 from the schools' own pages (Associação Brasileira de Kitesurf school list, Kitesurf Escola Paraíso, BGKite School, Barra Grande Beach Club, InfoCumbuco, KiteFeliz) and general north-east Brazil trade-wind climatology. Exact launch pins, beach-access rules, buggy and vehicle restrictions on the sand, the Jericoacoara National Park entry rules and fees, rescue cover and the tide state that suits each launch all still need confirming on site — coordinates are town or beach centres, not verified launch points.
Local hazards
- Very busy at peak season — schools, freeriders and downwinders share the beach, so give way and keep clear of lessons.
- A southerly or south-westerly wind is offshore on this coast — do not launch from the beach in it.
- Fishing boats (jangadas) and their lines sit off the beach — keep clear of the anchoring area.
- Tidal range changes the beach a lot: pools that are flat at low water turn into chop and shorebreak at high water.
- Buggies and vehicles use the sand and dunes towards Cauípe — watch your lines on the beach.
