About this spot
De Panne, right on the French border, has the widest beach in Belgium: at low tide the sand stretches several hundred metres out to sea, leaving huge, knee-deep flats with smooth water — the closest thing to a lagoon the Belgian coast offers. At high tide the sea comes right back to the dunes and the spot turns into open chop and small waves.
W, SW and NW winds work best along this stretch; N is side-onshore. S, SE and E come from over the land and are dangerous — the wind is also gusty in the lee of the dunes. The tide rules everything here: sessions are planned around the tide table, because the flooding tide moves fast and can cover a kilometre of flat in an hour or two. Keep clear of the flagged swimming zone in summer. The water is cool all year (roughly 8–17 °C).
Access is from the Zeedijk behind the dunes, with a large car park at the edge of town; the beach runs on towards the French border. Ideal for beginners at low tide, with kite schools operating in season, while freestylers love the sheer scale of the flat water. Cafés, showers and rental are all in town.
