About this spot
Oostende is Belgium's biggest seaside city and its beach is a long, open stretch of sand facing the North Sea directly. Unlike the sheltered bays further east, this is a proper wave spot on the Belgian coast: with W to NW wind, North Sea swell wraps in and builds a clean, punchy shore break, while most days deliver solid chop for boosting.
W, WNW, NW and N are the best directions; SW works but is gusty around the harbour. S, SE and E blow off the city — offshore, dangerous, and a drift towards the harbour wall or breakwaters ends badly. The tide (roughly 4–5 m range) transforms the beach: at low tide a field of sandbanks appears with flats and channels between them; near high tide the shore break grows heavy. Watch the harbour approach channel (ferries), the marked swimming zones in summer and the groynes along the promenade. The water is cool all year (roughly 8–17 °C).
Access is directly from the Zeedijk promenade, with large paid car parks along it. This is a spot for intermediates and experts — the shore break, currents near the harbour wall and the crowd make it less beginner-friendly than Knokke or De Panne; the schools use the calmer beaches east and west of the city.
